Halloween trip ideas for older children in eastern Moselle

Where fantasy meets history

Moselle is diverse, both in terms of its landscapes and its remarkable sites. Lina, Adel, Inès and Leïla, who travelled from Bourgogne-Franche-Comté especially, took a road trip in eastern Moselle during the autumn half term holidays. They even allowed themselves an extra treat!

Escape Game au Bambesch

Bambidestroff and its mysteries

Eager to discover this unfamiliar region and its Bêtes et Sorcières (Beasts and Witches) festival, the whole family headed to Bambidestroff and the surrounding area.

They began their trip at the Ouvrage du Bambesch on the Maginot Line, for a special Halloween Escape Game in the tunnels of this underground fort. “It was as scary as it was well done”, concludes Adel.

Lëila could not conceal his surprise: “It’s crazy how you can visit different historical periods in a single region.”

Next stop, the small village of Hombourg-Haut, “we’d been told it was worth the detour”, to check in to their accommodation for the night at Gîte l’Écumoir, before rounding off the day with some exciting activities at Porcelette, including a bette digging workshop.

Adel can't hide his enthusiasm: "It's so cool to dig beetroot like that!"

I was looking for activities the whole family would enjoy. Friends had told me about this corner of Moselle. I’m glad we listened to them, and we will pass on our own recommendations in turn.
Moulin d'Eschviller

Beasts and Witches at Eschviller Mill

After this adventure, they headed to Le Moulin d’Eschviller (Volmunster), less than 20 minutes away, to discover the history of a flour manufacturer, nestled in the countryside. While there, they took the opportunity to enjoy its Halloween trails and events.

As an added bonus, the family was able to visit the autumn market organised by the arboriculture association and enjoy a fire display that was, in Leïla’s words, “brilliant and spectacular”.

Ranch des bisons

Wild safari at the Bison Ranch

Halloween surrounded by bison. It’s a bit different, right? Adel chose this option immediately when planning a short break on the banks of the Moselle with his family. “I found it very unique”, he admits. And he was right.

Immersed in nature, the fully equipped luxury lodges of Ranch des Bisons were a hit with his daughters. With a wild safari and food tastings on the cards, it was a recipe for an unforgettable day and night.

A bonus day in East Moselle!

Egged on by their children, Adel and Lina decided to extend their stay by an extra day. Their adventure continued with a day spent in nature, which the whole family loved.

Randonnée autour du Simserhof

“As fans of hiking, we were in for a treat!” The famous Rocher de l’Altschlossfelsen circuit close to Roppeviller, the Colorado of Bitche country, captivated the whole family! “It’s magnificent. I’d never seen anything like it!”, reports Leïla, aged 12.

After all that exertion, time to relax. Leïla, a fan of the Tolkien universe, grinned from ear to ear the moment she saw her home for the night at guest house La Terre du Milieu Gîte in Spicheren, where visitors can spend the night in the Elf Kingdom or a Hobbit Hole. “It’s like a dream!”

The next morning, these modern-day adventurers were eager to visit Bliesbruck-Reinheim archeological park and step back into ancient times. “We also put one foot in Germany!”, adds Inès. Gallo-roman baths, the remains of an ancient town...

“It’s an incredible place for everyone”, enthuses Lina. “What fascinated me most was the tomb of the Princess of Reinheim, which dates from the 4th century BC.”
