Between the 14th and 16th centuries, a climate of insecurity reigned on the banks of the Moselle and the Seille due to the many conflicts between the Republic of Metz and the Duchies of Lorraine and Bar, each of which tried to claim this rich land for its own. At the centre of old winegrowing villages clinging to the hillsides, fortified churches that were used as defensive structures bear witness to the insecurity of bygone days. The church in Sillegny is an example of this: Erected in the 15th century, it contains some remarkable frescoes, perfectly preserved.
