Nicknamed Lanterne du Bon Dieu, it boasts 6,500 m2 of stained glass windows, the largest in Europe. It offers an ideal synthesis of the art of stained glass from the 13th to the 20th century.

Practical information

Historic monument or place to visit in METZ, on the theme(s) Sacred art, awarded with the Label Listed historic monument (MH).
The first set by Herman de Munster on the west façade dates from the late 14th century. But two-thirds of the surviving early stained glass dates back to the Renaissance, marking the first golden age with works by Thibaut de Lixheim and above all Valentin Bousch. The second golden age, in the 19th century, was marked by the development of Laurent-Charles Maréchal's glass painting workshop. And a third period, and not the least, the 20th century, whose high windows by Pierre Gaudin (1954), Jacques Villon's stained-glass windows (1957) in the Chapelle du Saint-Sacrement, Georges Bissières' stained-glass windows (1959), and Marc Chagall's works (1962-1969) in the north transept and ambulatory all contribute to the Cathedral's renown.
