BICHEL-SUD SHELTER

In the heart of the Koenigsmacker forest, the Bichel-Sud shelter is an interval shelter of the Maginot Line built to house about forty men of the 167th fortress infantry regiment who were on "border guard" in 1939/1940. This shelter still contains a lot of equipment in working order, such as the cooker, a generator from 1938 and the ventilation system. During a guided tour, you can discover the living conditions of the men of the concrete.

Practical information

Historic monument or place to visit in KOENIGSMACKER, on the theme(s) Military interest.
The shelter was designed to house about 40 men in maximum safety and comfort. To do this, it was equipped with two diesel engines, producing the electricity needed for lighting and ventilation. A steam boiler provided heating for the building and a wood and charcoal cooker was used to heat the food prepared at the rear. Abandoned by the army in 1972, since 2002 it has been the object of the attentive care of an association of volunteer enthusiasts who are endeavouring to refurbish all the installations.
