The battle pitted 125,000 Frenchmen against 285,000 Germans. More than 32,000 fighters were put out of action. The glacis between Saint Marie and Saint Privat was named by the King of Prussia "the tomb of his guard". From then on, the Rhine army commanded by Marshal Bazaine took refuge under Metz. After a few unsuccessful attempts to get out, they surrendered to the enemy on the following October 27th. Thus disappeared the main organized force of the country.
