Four immense orchestral colorists come together here. Inspired by Baudelaire, Tout un monde lointain is one of Dutilleux's most poetic pages, wonderfully translated by Edgar Moreau's captivating cello. What beauty, too, in the quivering but anguished evening of Lili Boulanger, who signs her testament here, at just 24 years of age: she would die a few months later of an illness. Debussy then paints the gentle iridescence of the ocean, before Ravel, in 1920, makes us dance a ramshackle waltz on the smoking ruins of old Europe.
