Bambesch Fortification lies on the Maginot Line. The purpose of this fortification was to defend Route Nationale 3, a major road linking Metz to Sarrebruck. It has three infantry and artillery blocks which are linked by tunnels some 22 metres underground, which are fitted with objects and material required for daily life. The fortification was attacked and taken over by the German army on 20 June 1940.
