The Enlightenment, the leading movement of the 18th century, held high the ideals of freedom, reason, progress and emancipation in the face of obscurantism. Yet today, this current of thought is sometimes accused of masking tragic excesses, such as colonialism, slavery and imperialism, which have marked the history of the West. What remains of these ideals in the face of criticism? Can the Enlightenment still provide food for thought in these uncertain times?
