Meet Bacchus, the Roman derivative of the Greek god Dionysus, one of the most complex deities in the Olympian pantheon.

Known primarily as the god of wine, Caravaggio's Bacchus became the Western iconographic reference: a languid young man crowned with a vine leaf and holding a glass of wine. And quite naturally, the figure is associated with celebration, excess and drunkenness.

Yet this deity is far more complex than the drink with which he is associated. Like wine, Bacchus is a god who embodies ecstasy and self-abandonment, but whose worship can lead to drunkenness and loss of control. It's also for this reason that he's referred to as the father of the dramatic arts, since the theater allows us to take on another personality.

The cult of Dionysus or Bacchus is very different from that of the "classical" divinities, with a mixture of public ceremonies and secret initiations, suggesting that its origins lie outside the Greek world. In fact, Dionysus appeared on Mycenaean tablets as early as the 13th century BC. But his double birth, his mortal mother and his close relationship with the earth are characteristics of several gods worshipped in the ancient Mediterranean world, stemming from primitive beliefs essentially based on the elements. His proximity to Pan and the Satyrs attests to his close ties with nature.

Its age, complexity and many facets mean that it cannot be reduced to the drunken man of modern and contemporary representations, and even less to a simple wine advertisement. However, it is interesting to note that he is still very much present in people's minds and in iconography.
