CONFERENCE - ART IN RELATION - IMMERSIVE INSTALLATIONS

Since 2006, artist Philippe Parreno has been creating luminous panels, similar to those that adorn the pediments of theaters and concert halls, which he programs to flash at varying intervals. The pediment marks the boundary between spectacle and world, fiction and reality. This talk will examine one of his first light panels, Marquee (2008), in the context of the artist's work. It will also be an opportunity to link his work to a new approach to art, known as "relational aesthetics", of which Philippe Parreno became a leading figure in the early 1990s. Alongside a group of young artists, Philippe Parreno put forward the idea that art is a form of direct social interaction. He and his fellow artists see the object as a relational element, and consequently consider the idea of exhibition to be paramount.
