The 13th-century Récollets cloister is a haven of peace in the heart of the city. Jean-Marie Pelt founded the Institut Européen d'Ecologie here in 1972. Two gardens have been laid out in partnership with the Société Française d'Ethnopharmacologie: the jardin des Simples (medicinal plants), used by monks to treat the sick, and the jardin des plantes toxiques et dangereuses (toxic and dangerous plants), used by the pharmacy to prepare medicines.
