In recent years, art historians have been deploying new approaches to the analysis of artworks: olfactory studies, cognitive studies, perceptive studies. Drawing on several examples from the history of modern and contemporary art, this talk outlines some of the principles associated with this new research, which opens up a whole new receptive field for apprehending works of art and exhibitions.
